Hearing
Accessibility Study
Although airport noise cannot be
eliminated, AmericanAirlines®/ AmericanEagle® has joined forces with Audex, a leading
manufacturer of assistive listening devices, to determine ways to make hearing
and understanding in noisy airports easier and more effective. With a desire to
make their passengers' travel experience the best it can be, American is
allowing a six month statistical study to gather data and passenger comments on
new amplified listening systems installed in each of its gate counters. These
new systems are designed to make understanding the agent easier by using an
amplified and hearing aid compatible handset with volume control. Everyone,
including those with normal hearing, hearing impaired people with or without
hearing aids, and cochlear implant wearers can benefit from this system. It is
always on and always ready to use, mounted on the front or side of each gate
counter. There is no need to request anything. When the handset is placed to
the traveler's ear the agent's voice can be made instantly louder and clearer
with the volume control.
This is the first study of this magnitude
ever attempted at a U.S. airport. As a traveller you have an opportunity to
help shape the future of listening assistance in these noisy environments by
trying the system and filling out the questionnaire on this site. If you are
not hearing impaired, you may have a friend or family member who will benefit
from the data you provide on this questionnaire. If you know other travellers
who would be interested in this study, tell them about it and encourage them to
participate when they travel through the DFW airport. Information and a
questionnaire can also be obtained by calling Audex at 800-237-0716, or faxing
a request to 800-AUDEX-74.
Making air-travel easier and more enjoyable
through better hearing is the final goal of this study. Give us your input and
benefit from the changes that result!
